Jordan Maison tweeted this morning that he had a bit of Star Wars news, and clarified to us that it was not in regards to a trailer. He has now posted a write-up on the details regarding Finn’s character in The Force Awakens.
Let’s dissect what he says in the article, but first, I want to warn all of you that this is your official SPOILER WARNING. Spoilers will be contained in the article ahead and so please don’t scroll down past the picture of John Boyega if you don’t want to be spoiled.
He says that Finn only has one name that has been released because Finn is pretty much his only name. The First Order identifies their people by their serial numbers (Hello, Clone Wars). Finn’s serial number is spoken by both the Finn action figure and the Captain Phasma mask. His serial number is FN-2187, or Finn for short.
This is so cool to me because, as an avid fan of the Clone Wars show that aired on Cartoon Network, to me this seems like a bit of a nod. It also makes sense for a human being to want to humanize himself by taking his serial number and making it into an acceptable identity.
Maison says that Finn is pretty much a protégé of sorts to Captain Phasma. This explains why she is so ready to drop everything and find Finn and return him. This is pretty straight forward and also explains how Finn seems to know how to fly a Tie Fighter and be a crack shot with a blaster if he wasn’t high ranking. There were earlier rumors about Finn being a sort of Black Ops type of Trooper, and this kind of fits.
Maison also talks about how Finn knows how to use a lightsaber. He says that most people think this means Finn is force sensitive. Not that it isn’t the case, but Finn has already had lightsaber training. The First Order train their more promising trooper to use a shield and a lightsaber. Maison doesn’t know what for yet. Even before spotting the old Ralph McQuarrie artwork of the stormtrooper with the lightsaber, I thought of that picture. In Star Wars rebels they reuse a lot of Ralph McQuarrie’s artwork and repurpose them for new creatures and events. Obviously JJ has done the same.
