Hey there! I’m back with another beer pairing for your holiday delight! Tonight we’ll be looking at Elf and Southern Star Bombshell Blonde Ale from Conroe, TX. Enjoy!
December 12th Elf
Southern Star Bombshell Blonde
One movie that perhaps became an unexpected Christmas classic is Elf. Buddy, played by Will Ferrell, is an oversized elf in the North Pole. One day he is told that he is not actually an elf and is actually a human from New York City and that his parents gave him up for adoption shortly after birth. Feeling a desire for belonging, Buddy sets off, eerily similarly to Rudolph in that Christmas classic, on his own to find his father. Before he sets off, he finds out that his father was put on the naughty list (gasp). When Buddy gets to New York he does everything you’re not supposed to do, like picking gum off railings and eating it and yelling at a mall Santa out of excitement. Buddy meets his father, played by James Caan, who really is a jerk, and his half brother who is skeptical of Buddy’s origin. He also meets a blonde Zooey Deschanel which is a strange site to see. At the end, it is the Christmas spirit that ends up saves Christmas itself, because of course Christmas was in jeopardy. If you haven’t seen this film and you see Will Ferrell is in it, you might assume this movie is inappropriate. I would say it is edgy, but it is certainly not inappropriate. This is one of those films that has humor for kids and adults and both will get enjoyment by it.
I have chosen Southern Star Bombshell Blonde ale for multiple reasons. One of these reasons is blonde Zooey Deschanel (of course you saw that coming) and also because this beer is light which corresponds to this movie in a good way. This beer is very light but also has some complexity to it you wouldn’t normally think of when you think of a blonde. It has a slight hoppiness to go along with the creamy texture of both the head and the finish. This beer will leave you colder than you were when you came inside from shoveling snow…or if you’re in Houston, this is a perfect beer for right now because it’s routinely in the 70’s outside this time of year. This beer both represents Buddy and Sonny from the Godf…sorry. His father. I meant his father. This beer both represents Buddy and HIS FATHER because of both the creamy and wholesomeness and the hoppy bitterness that is represented in in the back of the tastebuds. Not to mention this beer was brewed like an hour from my house. That’s gotta count for something, right?
